Energy Cafe March 22 on Wind

 "The Wind Connection"

March 22, 6-7:30 p.m.

Farmers Gastropub, 431 S. Jefferson, Springfield

"The Wind Connection" is the theme of our third Energy Cafe. Wind energy is one of the most promising forms of renewable energy in the U.S. In 2008, wind energy additions made up 42% of all newly installed energy production capacity in the U.S. and small wind installations grew by 78%. The market is developing quickly, and regional differences play heavily into the cost-effectiveness and suitability of small- and large-scale wind installations.

Dan Boyt, wind energy instructor at Crowder College's Missouri Alternative and Renewable Energy Technology Center, Neosho, will be our speaker. He will focus on small wind installations, discussing the technologies, what works and what doesn't, as well as incentives, rebates and policies and the economics of small wind in Missouri.

The utility scale wind market is growing quickly in Missouri, with nearly 150 megawatts added in 2009. Dan will briefly look at the market potential in the U.S. and Missouri and our region and investigate the steps being taken by other countries to bring wind capacity online.

Jim Gardner, ONE's Energy Tech Talk blogger, will moderate the discussion.

Here' are the dates for the next two Energy Cafes. We'll take a break June through October to prepare for our annual conference Oct. 7-8,, then pick up again next November. Stay tuned for topics and speakers, but we'll likely touch on wind, biomass and energy efficiency in the next three Cafes.

ONE 3: Connect With New Energy

ONE 3: Connect With New Energy Oct. 7-8 will be your opportunity to meet others who share your interest in renewable, alternative energy  and energy independence.

Learn how farmers can grow crops for food and fuel more sustainably. Find out what which research and development initiatives in fuel cells, smart grids, biofuels and batteries are the most promising. Meet solar and wind installers, home energy auditors, green builders and designers and suppliers of energy-efficient materials and products. Learn what utilities are doing to improve efficiency and capture or reduce carbon. Visit some energy-efficient buildings. All at the 2010 ONE Conference at Plaster Student Union, Missouri State University.

This year we again will offer several plenary sessions touching on broad themes and concepts. There will be plenty of breakout sessions and a green jobs forum that looks at opportunities in the Ozarks for green employment. We also plan to offer field trips and even a workshop or two with more hands-on opportunities.

Some of the broad categories we'll touch on include:

  • Energy-efficient residential and commercial building techniques, products and systems
  • Farmers/rural
  • Power production
  • Transportation
  • Biofuels

“I enjoyed the local food production session, and have already tried to implement the ‘buy local food’ message. I enjoyed all the sessions, even if it was information way over my head. It still gave me a glimpse into the future of energy and what conversations need to be taking place.”
